Hyakunin Isshu Project: Poem 17
Ariwara no Narihira (825-880): The defining romantic of the Heian era and protagonist of The Tales of Ise.
Written for Empress Takaiko's screen painting of the Tatsuta River, this poem hides a forbidden, desperate love behind majestic nature. Separated by class, Narihira uses the legendary hyperbole "Chihayaburu" (unheard of even by the ancient gods) to express a passion that burns as intensely as the crimson autumn leaves.
Produced by Twilight Master, this track is a passionate collision of elegant Chinese melodies and the earthy, raw power of the "Northwest Wind." We heavily decorated the iconic "Chihayaburu" motif, rendering the entire song exclusively in flawless Chinese. It is a striking testament to the absolute beauty of the language and the untamed, desperate romance of the original poem.
