Based in Okinawa, singer-songwriter and producer Tosh Kugai releases his debut album, maboroshi.
Built around his musical roots in alternative rock and completely self-produced, the album explores three core themes: self-liberation, mortality, and detachment from hyper-consumerism. Inspired by Robert Henri's book The Art Spirit, the nine tracks showcase a pure, unfiltered creative drive emanating straight from within.
The album opens with "Wrong Direction," a raw declaration of moving forward while confronting past mistakes and regrets. It leads into "If I," a psychedelic rock track inspired by Osamu Tezuka's legendary manga Phoenix; "Super Lonely," an airy alternative-pop song contrasting a dystopian lyrical world with bright melodies; and "Do You Remember?," an indie-rock anthem capturing fragile nostalgia and lingering longing.
The journey continues with "The Moon, It's Amazing," a three-part hard rock narrative centering on a werewolf metaphor to dissect human greed; "On This Island," a chillwave piece infused with Latin pop accents; and the title track "maboroshi," a haunting reflection on mortality inspired by Wim Wenders film Wings of Desire. After "11," a tender and sincere love song, the album closes with "yes, i'm done," a biting alternative-rock critique of hyper-capitalist society.
Handling everything from production to mixing, Tosh Kugai weaves diverse influences into a cohesive sonic landscape elevated by his sharp melodic instinct and accessible pop sensibility. maboroshi stands as a monumental first step - an uncompromising pursuit of the music he truly needed to create.
