Artist Profile

  • Tomoya Naka

Tomoya Naka is a composer and pianist whose music explores silence, memory, nature, and the fleeting movements of the human heart. In 2013, he released ELEMENTS, a neoclassical work that marked the beginning of his distinctive musical journey. Since then, he has developed a unique musical language that moves freely across classical, post-classical, contemporary music, and improvisation, with the piano at its center. His works have been released and distributed internationally, accumulating more than 50 million streams worldwide. His acclaimed piece Rainy Song was sampled by American hip-hop artist BONES for his track WhereTheTreesMeetTheFreeway. His music has also been featured in visual and broadcast works, including NHK The Sunday Museum (Nichiyo Bijutsukan). Naka also served as Music Production for the Hong Kong animated film CO COTTON, which won Best Animated Film at the 2021 Chainsaw Game & Music Festival. His music captures fleeting moments found in everyday life - the presence of rain, the moon, the sea, and the wind; the changing seasons; memories that have passed; and the distance between people. He treats not only melody and harmony as musical elements, but also space, breath, and the moment when a sound disappears, creating music that carries a strong sense of life within its stillness. For Naka, music is not something that exists only to serve a purpose. Just as birds sing, insects call, and the wind moves, singing and making music are themselves expressions of life. Music simply existing as it is. Through sounds and moments that can exist only once, Naka seeks to touch the memories and senses of each listener, allowing every person to discover their own time within the music.
