Marking the 20th anniversary of his solo career, Akita-born artist ASAGI unveils a long-awaited musical work inspired by Namahage, a traditional folk ritual deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of his homeland.

In Akita, where harsh winters blanket the landscape in snow, Namahage has been revered and passed down through generations as a formidable yet sacred presence. Beneath its fearsome appearance and seemingly ferocious behavior lies the heartfelt wisdom of generations past: to admonish idleness, ward off misfortune, and bring blessings and prosperity to every household.

The song's title, "Namomihagi," derives from the expression believed to be the etymological origin of "Namahage." In earlier times, the marks left on one's hands and feet from lingering too long beside the warmth of a traditional hearth during winter were known as namomi. The symbolic act of stripping away these marks was understood as a warning against laziness and an exhortation to live with diligence and integrity.

As the passage of time transforms both our daily lives and the values by which we live, a profound question emerges: while humanity has gained unprecedented convenience and material prosperity, what have we lost, and what are we gradually forgetting?

Returning in spirit to the snow-covered landscapes of his childhood and the ancient traditions that continue to inhabit them, ASAGI reinterprets their underlying philosophy through his own artistic vision. With profound reverence for the cultural legacy of his birthplace, he ventures beyond merely retelling an inherited tale, creating an entirely new legend that speaks directly to those living in the present age.

Namahage is often perceived as an embodiment of fear, yet what message has this enigmatic figure truly sought to impart across the centuries? And what deeper meaning does ASAGI, assuming the guise of Namahage himself, wish to convey to the world of the Reiwa era?

His artistic exploration transcends mere nostalgia for traditions threatened by the passage of time. It becomes a contemplation of the values we must preserve, the wisdom we ought to pass on, and the very essence of what it means to be human.

After two decades of artistic evolution, ASAGI returns to the enduring spirit of his homeland. The new legend woven from his soul will break through the stillness of the frozen winter and bring forth a single blossom of snow in the Reiwa era.
