Loud guitars, a weary and somewhat lonely voice, and lyrics made up of words that don't necessarily mean very much. That is what this song is built around.
There is a certain distance I wanted to keep throughout the song the feeling of stepping back and looking at everyday life and even at myself from a little further away. Not getting too emotional about things, not trying to make sense of everything, but simply watching what is happening with a slightly detached eye.
But no matter how far you try to step back, you can never really escape reality. Even when you think you have put some distance between yourself and everything around you, life, time, trivial things, and all the little annoyances keep coming straight toward you. You think you are standing somewhere outside of it all, looking in, only to realize that you are right back in the middle of it. That feeling is at the heart of this song.
That doesnt mean there is any desire to fight against it. There is no attempt to change anything or force some kind of answer out of it. It is more about staying slightly detached and simply looking at what is in front of you. The distorted guitars and the tired, distant vocals come from that same place.
The lyrics are not meant to arrive at any particular conclusion. Some of the words might seem meaningful, while others are almost completely meaningless. Some are simply there because they felt right in the moment. There is a sense of emptiness to them, but that doesnt mean there is a complete lack of feeling. If anything, the distance comes from having something to feel in the first place, and then trying to look at it from somewhere a little further away.
There is something about having a detached perspective while everything around you is unbearably loud. Not strong enough to laugh it all off, but not serious enough to face everything head-on either. Somewhere in between, just watching yourself and the world around you.
Some things might seem trivial when you look at them from a distance, but that distance never lasts. You cannot really step outside of reality. In the end, it always finds its way back to you.
That sense of distance, and the feeling of being unable to escape what is right in front of you, is what I wanted to recreate with this song.
The Brash and Lily's sound is influenced by the alternative rock of the 90s, with a guitar tone and song texture that are sometimes nostalgic with a hint of melody and other times filled with noisy, roaring feedback. The band paints a new yet familiar landscape by blending the raw impulse of brashness with the delicate transience of fragility, a duality that resonates throughout their music.
