Moving from SONIC I to SONIQ, the Osaka-based rapper introduces a new chapter in his career with an album that explores his background, personal beliefs, and musical influences.
Raised in Sennan, Osaka, SONIQs relationship with hip-hop was shaped by his surroundings, relationships with friends and family, and the loss of people close to him. These experiences influenced his perspective and the way he approaches music. Across the album, he explores different emotions and aspects of his personality through tracks that each take a distinct direction.
Deeply influenced by US hip-hop, particularly Atlanta trap, SONIQ traveled to Atlanta with the intention of getting closer to the culture behind the sound. He wrote the lyrics for most of the project during his stay. Working with producer Salto, he explored new sonic directions centered on trap, while incorporating elements of Memphis Glo on select tracks. The result reflects both his connection to the US scene and his own perspective as an artist from Japans Kansai region.
The albums concept draws inspiration from the game SONIQ PRIME, playing on the connection between SONIQ and Sonic. Opening with in Game, the project uses the idea of a game as a framework for exploring his life, past hardships, and ongoing struggles, while emphasizing the freedom to move forward on his own terms.
Musically, the album moves between straightforward rap, flow-driven performances, melodic delivery, and more experimental approaches. The recording process also reflects a shift in his priorities, with greater emphasis on the energy and natural feel of a first take rather than technical perfection alone.
Recorded primarily at a studio built with friends in Izumisano, with additional sessions in Tokyo and Atlanta, the album serves as an introduction to SONIQs identity, experiences, and evolving sound. Trap and Glo remain central to his direction as he develops his style under a new name.
