  • Fumiko Sakura

Fumiko Sakura Pan Flute Performer Composer Researcher Educator Fumiko Sakura is an internationally acclaimed pan flute artist whose multifaceted career seamlessly unites performance, composition, and academic research. She began her musical path with the piano at age five, but it was the pan flute, discovered at eight, that resonated most deeply with her spirit. Drawn to its earthy, expressive timbre, she later traveled to Romania, the cultural cradle of the instrument, to study under the celebrated virtuoso Radu Nechifor. Her unique artistry earned her the Audience Prize at the 14th Romanian International Music Competition. In 2019, she was honored with an invitation to perform a two-day solo recital at the official residence of the Japanese Ambassador to Romania, appearing alongside her mentor in a poignant celebration of musical and cultural exchange. In 2021, Sakura made history as the first Asian pan flute performer to appear at the prestigious Sibiu International Theatre Festival (FITS), where she premiered five original works. In 2025, she became the first Asian artist to be officially featured in the program of Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, delivering a solo recital at the Romania Pavilion. She is the founder and president of the Japan Romania Pan Flute Association, formally endorsed by the Embassy of Romania. Currently, Sakura teaches at Tokyo College of Music and leads pan flute instruction at Seikei University. Offstage, her scholarly endeavors delve into the history, evolution, and pedagogy of the pan flute. Through her dedication, Sakura continues to elevate the instruments cultural and academic legacy, bridging ancient tradition and contemporary artistry in Japan and across the globe.
