    The Abacus Miscount

    Akemi

The Abacus Miscount is a mid tempo city pop track that portrays the quiet closing hour of a small shop, where one bead that will not settle reveals a shift in the hour her visitor arrives.
The counter of a stationery shop off the Chuo Line, beads flicked just before closing, a slanted scribble in the corner of a delivery slip, and a shallow gap between the columns create a hushed scene where the miscount in the ledger points not to the figures but to a growing distance between two people.

Performed by the fictional AI singer Akemi, the song captures the emotions of adulthood that refuses to blame the other person, lays down the question she could simply ask, and chooses to carry the part that will not add up on her own side of the counter.
Inspired by the late 1970s to early 1980s Japanese new music and city pop, the track reimagines that era urban lyricism through images of a shopping street at dusk, the air of a shop counter, and the temperature of two paths that no longer meet.

Clearing the single stray bead to nothing, she sends every column back to its home place, and only the hour she decides not to count again stays with her.
She lays her unspoken waiting between the columns, folds away the slips of the day, and lowers the shutter with a single turn of the key.
