Synopsis
Heibei, an apprentice to blacksmith Riemon of Bingo-cho, Osaka, had a deep relationship with Kokan, a prostitute from Dojima-Shinchi. One day, Kokan's aunt visits Heibei and reveals that she was the daughter of a former falconer from Harima. After her father became a ronin, she took her in as her aunt and uncle. However, when the family's fortunes began to decline, Kokan became a prostitute herself to help her aunt and uncle, and has remained so ever since.

However, Heibei's brother has recently returned to his hometown, and a messenger has arrived to announce that he has taken Kokan to Harima and wants to give her as a bride. However, Kokan denies that she would rather die than leave Heibei and return to her homeland.
In an attempt to raise money for his freedom, Heibei took on piecework, making the linings of geta sandals, but his master discovered this. Due to his usual bad behavior, he was eventually disowned and thrown out of the shop.

The country samurai customer was actually a messenger from Kokan's hometown, Wada Dennai, the son of Kokan's wet nurse. Dennai showed him a letter from Kokan's mother that had been entrusted to him, and persuaded him to return home with compassion. To get out of the situation, Kokan reluctantly promised to return home, but seized an opportunity to run out of Izumiya with Heibei and escape along the rooftops.

The two headed east from Dojima-Nakamachi. Recalling the previous double suicides that had occurred, they passed Naniwabashi Bridge and Bingomachi, and arrived at the indigo fields of Kitano, where Kokan's aunt lived.
