古本屋のいちばん奥で
背表紙の褪せた本を買った
途中のページを開いたら
細い鉛筆の線があった
誰かがそこで立ち止まり
何かを思った跡なのか
その一行の横だけに
小さな丸が残っていた
名前も 顔も
知らない人なのに
なぜだろう
少しだけ近く感じた
あなたは余白に住んでいる
文字と文字との隙間に
消さなかった一本の線が
遠い時間を連れてくる
僕とは違う人生で
同じ言葉に立ち止まった
それだけのことが
なぜこんなに
静かに胸へ残るのだろう
四十二ページの端には
「ここから」とだけ書いてある
何がそこから始まったのか
続きを僕は知らない
窓の外では雨がやみ
舗道を人が急いでゆく
この本を手放した理由も
もう確かめようがない
それでも僕は
ページをめくるたび
見知らぬ時間を
少しずつ歩いてゆく
あなたは余白に住んでいる
声も足音もないまま
迷った跡も ためらいさえも
鉛筆だけが覚えている
僕とは違う人生で
同じ言葉を見つめていた
その偶然だけで
この世界は
少し広くなる気がした
最後のページには
何もなかった
だから僕も
何も書かなかった
いつか別の誰かが
この本を開く日のために
僕らは余白に住んでいる
誰にも見えない場所で
残したものと 残さなかったもの
その間に時間がある
会うことのない誰かとも
同じ言葉で立ち止まれる
本を閉じても
消えないものが
ひとつあれば それでいい
古い本を棚へ戻す
