I thought it was a miracle…

The first time I noticed you was in elementary school—

We sat side by side in the same class

I’d forgotten my textbook

So I looked at yours together with you;

That’s my very first memory

We whispered so the teacher wouldn’t catch us

The way you smiled still stuck with me

We played together, took part in school events;

Everything was with you

So those days shone and became precious memories

From middle school, we met less and less

I no longer knew how to start a conversation

I would watch you —

So near, yet somehow far away

That contradictory feeling pushed and pulled

And I spent my days unable to do anything

Before I knew it, graduation day came

It was odd weather for the season — raining

As if mirroring my heart:

Loneliness and wistfulness tangled together

My fragile, fleeting heart

Time after that flew by

And before I knew it I’d become a working adult

Still, I couldn’t forget you;

I kept looking through the graduation album

Remembering you over and over again

One night, on my way home from work

I spotted you and called out

Finally I could get closer and speak —

And at that moment the rain suddenly came down

Startled, I grabbed a folding umbrella from my bag

And handed it to you, then I ran away

…Time passed again after that

On my way home, only the rain seemed to soak

Into the hollow of my heart

Holding an umbrella, I climbed the stairs looking down

And then, I thought I heard your voice

I thought it was just my imagination

But I hoped it wasn’t

I turned my face toward where the voice came from —

And there you were

My heart felt like it would burst from my chest

…That’s what I was thinking back on

Now I spend every day with you

So I’m glad I gave you a ring

So we’d never part again

Holding you gently, so I wouldn’t break

The one who’s been by my side
