LUNCH KIT GENTLE

Album Review

"Wild, yet gentle."

That contradiction lies at the heart of LUNCH KIT GENTLE, the 13th album by Japanese artist Light Warrior Nachos.

Featuring 15 tracks and running for roughly 22 minutes, the album moves at an unusual pace. Many of the songs are barely a minute long. "MUTEKI" is only 52 seconds. "WAKARANAI" ("I Don't Know") lasts just 57 seconds.

But this is not simply an album made up of short songs.

Instead, Nachos seems to capture thoughts, emotions, rhythms, jokes, and fleeting moments exactly as they appear-without feeling the need to explain them or stretch them into something bigger.

The album opens with "KENKYONA ITAMAE" ("Humble Sushi Chef"), followed by "YUME MITAI" ("Feels Like a Dream"), "MAA IKKA" ("Oh Well"), and "MELONY." From there, the listener is taken through a strange and playful world where everyday life and absurdity constantly collide.

There is "OCHA NO UTA" ("The Tea Song"), "MUTEKI" ("Invincible"), and the wonderfully mysterious "ABARA OUGI LASSI" ("Ribcage Secret Technique Lassi").

Then comes "MIC CHECK."

Something that would normally be nothing more than a routine soundcheck becomes a song.

That is one of the most fascinating things about Nachos' music: almost anything can become music.

A simple phrase can suddenly feel sincere. A ridiculous title can unexpectedly become philosophical. A moment of humor can turn into loneliness before you even realize it.

"ANATA SUKI" ("I Like You") brings an almost childlike directness, while "ARE KODOKU" ("Wait... Is This Loneliness?") quietly reveals something more vulnerable underneath the humor.

This contrast is what gives LUNCH KIT GENTLE its character.

It sounds playful.

But underneath the jokes, there is something remarkably serious about being alive.

Laughter and loneliness.
The everyday and the universe.
The ridiculous and the philosophical.
Chaos and gentleness.

Nachos does not try to separate these things. He simply puts them all in the same room-and lets them dance together.

And then comes the final track:

"HAJIMARU UCHUU" - "The Universe Begins."

It is a curious title for the end of an album.

The album finishes, yet the universe begins.

And somehow, that feels exactly right.

After 15 tracks, there is no strong sense that anything has truly ended. Instead, there is a strange feeling that something is just about to start.

Perhaps that is what LUNCH KIT GENTLE is ultimately about.

You eat lunch.
You laugh.
You worry.
You become lonely.
You fall in love.
You check the microphone.
And then, somehow, you end up in space.

It is an incredibly human journey told in an incredibly unconventional way.

For his 13th album, Light Warrior Nachos does not attempt to create a grand, carefully explained narrative.

He simply turns ordinary life into music.

LUNCH KIT GENTLE is not an album that needs to be understood.

Listen to it first.

Laugh at it.
Get confused by it.
Dance to it.
Then listen again.

Before long, you may find yourself pulled into Nachos' strange, chaotic, gentle little universe.

And perhaps that is where the album truly begins.
