Based on Sei Shônagon’s same titled book, Makura no Sôshi consists of original compositions by singer-songwriter, Chika Ueda, with lyrics written by lyricist, poet, and copywriter Hiroshi Ichikura. The album was originally conceptualized by Ueda with the idea to create “music that beautifully conveys the Japanese language”. This concept, along with Ichikura’s desire to translate Makura no Sôshi into modern language, led to the creation of the album. Including translations of My Favorite Seasons and many of the book’s most famous passages, this novel song cycle is a masterful unification of a modern classic.
