Zolla is an original instrumental piece by pianist, composer, and arranger Asao Nogami.
Beginning with a quiet piano passage, the music gradually opens into a more expansive landscape as passionate rhythms and melodies emerge. Its sound carries the drive and intensity of flamenco, along with a lyrical quality reminiscent of Romani music, where a sense of dry melancholy exists alongside warmth and fire.
The piece evokes the image of a distant land, or a fleeting scene encountered somewhere along a journey at once strangely familiar and completely unknown. Stillness and exhilaration, melancholy and vitality intersect as the music unfolds like a lyrical poem without words.
While Zolla draws inspiration from flamenco, Romani music, and classical textures, it never settles comfortably into any single genre. That ability to move freely across musical boundaries and transform different influences into a distinct melodic language is at the heart of Asao Nogami is artistry. Zolla is a vivid expression of that genre-defying musical identity.
Composer, pianist, and arranger. As the creative force behind All That Jazz, he arranged and performed all tracks on the Ghibli Jazz series, which has sold over 200,000 copies. Now based in Nara, he performs at temples and cultural venues. His duo Tomoo and Saki brings warm, lyrical sound blending jazz and classical music.
