Inspired by Yamato Onna Shikoku Onna "Hibariyamahime Sutematsu" (1740)

The Conspiracy of Iwane Gozen of Hibariyama: The Wet Clothes of Yamato Onna at Taima Temple, and the Bounding of the Old Lady: The Old Lady Sutematsu

Synopsis
Iwane Gozen, the second wife of Minister of the Right Fujiwara Toyonari, intensely hates Yamato Onna, the daughter of his first wife, and repeatedly bullies her stepdaughter.
One day, a precious Kannon statue entrusted to her by the Emperor goes missing.
Iwane Gozen seizes this opportunity to frame Chujohime for theft.

On a freezing, snowy morning, Iwane ties Yamato Onna to an old pine tree in the garden and orders his subordinates to brutally beat her with split bamboo.

Subtitles: The subtitles for the premiere performance read "Yamato Musume (Yamato Girl)/Shikoku Musume (Shikoku Girl)."

Setting: Nara period. This historical Joruri story tells the tale of Yamato Musume, who wove the Taima Mandala at Taimadera Temple, and intertwines it with the political struggles of the Minister of the Right, Fujiwara Toyonari.

Yamato Musume languishes in pain and cold. Two maids, Kirinotani and Ukifune, who cherish her, rush to her aid.
To save the princess, the two deliberately start a fierce fight in front of Iwane. During the scuffle, a split bamboo accidentally hits Yamato Musume in a vital spot, killing her.

Iwane Lady panics and flees the scene.
