Beat & ambient producer TOMC's new piece is a beat music that combines the suppleness of jazz/chamber music and the strength of soul/hip-hop. The track is a contribution to "Motoko Tanaka's Memento Tokyo," a podcast by Motoko Tanaka, owner of Kissa Laundry, which covers "city", "public", and "architectural" topics.
The organic interplay of piano and wind instruments is an extension of the controlled, classical style of his previous ambient album, "Music for the Ninth Silence," and shows his musical deepening. At the same time, the strong drums reminiscent of neo-soul and 1970s funk are also present without any sense of discomfort, a characteristic of a beatmaker with a wide range of musical knowledge. The blending of various environmental sounds, such as the clinking of dishes and the sound of water, as heard in a cafe, is also noteworthy.
TOMC is a beat and ambient producer whose works have been released on acclaimed labels such as Inner Ocean Records (Canada), Insert Records (Sweden), and Kankyō Records, Local Visions, and Kakubarhythm (Japan). His 2023 album True Life was praised as 'a Nujabes for the 2020s' and was selected as one of the Best Albums of the Year by international music outlet Small Albums. In recent years, he has joined the legendary Japanese experimental collective Taj Mahal Travellers (now STONE MUSIC), touring with them in India. At the same time, his wide-ranging activities -- providing a monthly DJ mix for J-WAVE, engaging in dialogues with artists such as Tetsuya Komuro and tofubeats, and performing at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai -- have drawn attention for transcending the boundaries between mainstream and underground. Beyond his music, TOMC is also active as a writer. His recent book J-POP no Ongaku-teki Bouken (The Musical Adventures of J-POP) explores Japanese pop music from a unique, groove-oriented perspective.
