I'm writing a song that compares a relationship - from the beginning to the breakup - to a single movie.
When you're in the relationship, it's like the movie is still playing. But it's only after the breakup that the full story - the complete movie - really comes together.
In this song, a "sequel" refers to what happens after that movie ends - in other words, getting back together. So when the lyrics say:
"Good movies usually get a sequel - but most of them turn out bad,"
it's my way of saying that even though people often go back to past relationships, they rarely work out the second time. That's why the lyrics go on to suggest:
"There probably won't be a sequel to this one."
meaning, I don't think we'll get back together.
In the second verse, I draw a parallel between myself and the movie Stand by Me. If you've ever read the book or seen the film, I think you'll really connect with the lyrics on a deeper level.
