Spare Key Coda

Akemi

    Spare Key Coda

    Akemi

Spare Key Coda is a mid tempo city pop track that portrays an early morning farewell, in which a spare key given only to fill someone elses absence is quietly removed and returned.
A wilted geranium left on the windowsill, a newspaper folded with careful corners, and a single brass key slipped into a white envelope create a still, pale morning scene where six months of shaping herself to fit another person come quietly to an end.

Performed by the fictional AI singer Akemi, the song captures the emotions of adulthood that, sensing the cooling of a relationship, chooses not to ask for things to return to how they were, but to hand back its own access and step outside the door as a stranger.
Inspired by the late 1970s to early 1980s Japanese new music and urban pop, the track reimagines that era urban lyricism through images of daybreak in the city, the touch of a key, and the distance of a relationship with no name.

Once the key leaves the brass ring, the door can no longer be opened from the inside.
Without saying that the key is left there, she lets the envelope slip away and turns the corner carrying only the metal shavings on her fingertips.
