Didn't notice till I reached for two plates

Then laughed at myself

It's been weeks

I should know better by now

I put one plate back

And ate standing by the counter

I never even liked it much

With the door still open

My phone was already in my hand

No

So I put it down

The dumb little stories

You never asked to hear

But somehow always did

I still catch myself sometimes

Turning to where you used to sit

With half a sentence

Already out of my mouth

Dinner got cold

I ate it anyway

One plate

One glass

Then goodnight

Like we used to

I wash the plate

Put it in the rack

Then reach for the second one

There's nothing there
