This song was born from years of living and working as a river guide.
There were times when I felt lost.
Times when I felt I was taking the long way around.
Times when nothing seemed to move in the direction I had hoped.
Looking back, those moments became part of the journey.
By working with rivers and learning to move with the current while making my own choices, I found my way forward.
In 2026, this song became the theme song for Road to France, my challenge to compete in the French Riverboarding (Hydrospeed) Championship.
Rivers rarely flow exactly as we expect.
Life doesn't either.
"The Detour" was born from that experience.
River Gypsy is the music project of Yohei Sugawara, a riverboard guide whose life has been shaped by rivers, travel, and personal challenge. Based in Mitake, Okutama, Tokyo, Yohei works as a professional riverboarding and hydrospeed guide while writing songs inspired by life on the river, the feeling of moving forward by his own will, and the long detours that shape a life. His music is not created as a message for someone else, but as an expression of following his own heart and passion, born from the days he has kept moving forward while feeling lost, holding on to this way of life as if he could not let it go. Through a simple voice and guitar, River Gypsy expresses the detours of life, the uncertainty of moving forward, and the act of challenging himself while still carrying weakness.
