An EP by drummer Shin Kokawa and contemporary artist Aki YAHATA. Working from "borderlands" as a consistent theme, YAHATA builds video works out of field research and on-site reporting. Across these three tracks, Shin Kokawa's drums collaborate with sounds drawn from her footage and field recordings. "Butter Tea" emerges from footage of a journey in Bhutan; "Unrevealed Memories" was born from a collaboration with refugees in New York, built from sounds of memory and field recordings; and "Hidden Journey" turns a journey through Arizona into sound. Working primarily in video and installation, Aki YAHATA founded HENKYO.studio in Kyoto in 2020. She is the founder and editor of "Teshoku Web," an online archive of the world's hand-eating cultures, and in the latter half of 2025 expanded her activities as an Asian Cultural Council (ACC) fellow in residence in New York. In recent work she has also begun engaging with sound expression.
The 12th release in Shin Kokawa's "13 Weeks Consecutive Release" series.
In his pursuit of live drum expression, improvisational artist SHIN KOKAWA resonates with Japanese spirituality, including indigenous nature worship and the sublime concepts of Zen. He internalizes a diverse range of genres: free jazz, spiritual jazz, world music, ambient, and hardcore. By infusing the primitive, powerful, and beautiful sounds of his instruments with the raw intuition of the moment, he creates soundscapes that depict the vastness of the universe. Making his major debut as a founding member of the instrumental band jizue (founded in 2006), Kokawa has performed at numerous large-scale festivals in Japan and abroad, including the FUJI ROCK FESTIVAL. Since embarking on a solo career in 2019, he has released his 1st album 'ANIMA' (2020) and a 2nd album 'touch the sub conscious' (2024), which features collaborations with renowned artists such as Seiichi Yamamoto, Shing02, and Shun Ishiwaka. He is also an active member of the Kyoto-based experimental band kott, with whom he performed at FUJI ROCK FESTIVAL 2023. In 2026, he launched '13 ARTIST X 3 WORKS,' an ambitious project featuring collaborations with 13 different artists and 39 tracks to be released consecutively every week.
Aki YAHATA is a contemporary artist who creates cross-disciplinary works grounded in field research and reportage. Working primarily in video and installation, she is concerned with the overlap between the historical and cultural body and the physiological body, and explores ways of approaching its layered nature. As part of this inquiry, her recent work focuses on road movies, eating with the hands, and Eastern medicine. She is the founder and editor of "Teshoku Web" (https://teshoku.com), an online archive of hand-eating cultures around the world. More recently she has also begun working with sound. She completed the Master's program in Intermedia Art at the Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts, and after withdrawing from its doctoral program, graduated from Shiga University of Medical Science.
