The eleventh release in 13artists×3works, drummer Shin Kokawa's project of thirteen consecutive weekly collaborations. This time he meets shō player Eri Ito, an improviser who carries the thousand-year breath of gagaku while opening out sustained tones and overtones with a loop machine. On the opening track, Sun-Moon Camellia, shakuhachi player Taro Matsumoto joins them, as two Japanese wind instruments meet the pulse of the drums. From a piece set in Banshiki, the gagaku mode of winter, to The Einstein-Rosen Bridge, which traces the wormhole linking distant points in spacetime, ancient melody and the far reaches of the cosmos become one within an improvisation of breath and rhythm.

Artist Profile

  • SHIN KOKAWA

In his pursuit of live drum expression, improvisational artist SHIN KOKAWA resonates with Japanese spirituality, including indigenous nature worship and the sublime concepts of Zen. He internalizes a diverse range of genres: free jazz, spiritual jazz, world music, ambient, and hardcore. By infusing the primitive, powerful, and beautiful sounds of his instruments with the raw intuition of the moment, he creates soundscapes that depict the vastness of the universe. Making his major debut as a founding member of the instrumental band jizue (founded in 2006), Kokawa has performed at numerous large-scale festivals in Japan and abroad, including the FUJI ROCK FESTIVAL. Since embarking on a solo career in 2019, he has released his 1st album 'ANIMA' (2020) and a 2nd album 'touch the sub conscious' (2024), which features collaborations with renowned artists such as Seiichi Yamamoto, Shing02, and Shun Ishiwaka. He is also an active member of the Kyoto-based experimental band kott, with whom he performed at FUJI ROCK FESTIVAL 2023. In 2026, he launched '13 ARTIST X 3 WORKS,' an ambitious project featuring collaborations with 13 different artists and 39 tracks to be released consecutively every week.

  • Eri Ito

Shō player, improviser, composer Eri Ito first encountered the shō, the mouth organ used in Japanese gagaku (imperial court music), while studying at the Tokyo University of the Arts, and she has continued to perform for more than forty years since. As a member of Tokyo Gakuso, she appeared on stages such as Suntory Hall and the National Theatre (active until 2008), deepening her command of classical gagaku. In 2011 she relocated from Tokyo to Nara, expanding her work through performances and collaborations in Japan and abroad. Her activities are diverse, ranging from votive performances at temples and historic spaces to contemporary music, improvisation, and performances across other genres. In recent years she has used a loop machine to develop a highly spatial and distinctive sound built around the sustained, droning tones and overtones of the shō.
