MATSUBA, a rhythm unit that blends the musical tones of Rakugo performers with techno electronic sounds, makes a striking debut with their 1st EP, "Hottan."
In Kansai's traditional performing art of Kamigata Rakugo, performers traditionally begin their first stage with the piece "Higashi no Tabi: Hottan," a required lesson passed down through the ages that recounts the lively rhythm of a journey to Ise Shrine.
In the 1st EP "Hottan," starting from the unique rhythms of classic Rakugo, computer musician Lewo Chyba and Rakugo performer Edanoshin Katsura explore new rhythms that transcend genres, with the theme of the evolution of popular entertainment from the past to the present.
MATSUBA is a rhythm unit formed by Edanoshin Katsura, a Kamigata Rakugo storyteller carrying on the tradition of Kansai's performing arts, and Lewo Chyba, a computer musician active in underground Techno scenes worldwide. Their unique music production method harmonizes the linguistic rhythm and cadence inherited from Rakugo with the electronically controlled beats of Techno. In their live performances, Edanoshin Katsura takes the mic while Lewo Chyba skillfully manipulates the synthesizer. The units name is derived from Shofukutei Matsuba, a Rakugo performer who once thrived in the Kamigata region.
