The latest release from Studio M is titled Handel Variations, featuring Brahms's monumental Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel-a work often referred to by this nickname-alongside the original Handel pieces that inspired it, such as his own variations, the Chaconne in G major, and The Harmonious Blacksmith.
Many pianists have undertaken similar programs in the past, and naturally, those performances have been on the piano. This album, however, takes a different approach: both the Brahms and Handel works are performed using harpsichord sounds. Of course, a traditional harpsichord lacks the full range required for Brahms's score, so this is a concept uniquely possible with virtual instruments. Still, Brahms's Fugue is nothing short of magnificent on the harpsichord-please don't miss it.
Finally, the album closes with two non-variation works: pieces we consider among the most beautiful keyboard compositions left by the two composers. These are performed using guitar sounds. Although the timbre is that of a guitar, the performances follow the original piano scores without arrangement. We invite you to enjoy these beloved miniatures from a fresh sonic perspective.
