Midday Screen is a mid tempo city pop track that portrays the few seconds in which an old summer returns, standing before a giant street screen at noon.
The east exit of Shinjuku, a tide of people under parasols, files held in the crook of an arm, sand lifting off a distant infield, and a jersey number caked with mud create a bright and crowded scene where a memory she had kept at a distance comes back with sound attached.
Performed by the fictional AI singer Akemi, the song captures the emotions of adulthood that neither regrets nor blames the day two people refused to give up their own directions, and simply returns to the afternoon of the city she chose.
Inspired by the late 1970s to early 1980s Japanese new music and city pop, the track reimagines that era urban lyricism through images of midsummer light, street crowds, and a summer that belongs to someone else now.
As the scoreboard turns over, she tilts her parasol a little lower.
Leaving the cheering behind her back, she settles her afternoon stride and crosses toward the valley of towers.

A music project that reimagines the melancholic mood and nighttime glow of late 1970s to early 1980s Japanese City Pop and New Music through AI-assisted production and human direction. Akemi is a fictional singer with a backstory of being from Yamato City, Kanagawa, Japan. She sings of urban solitude, grown-up love, and bittersweet afterglow in a noir-tinged city pop sound. Lyrics, composition, vocals, and visuals are created using generative tools and curated through editing. This is an experimental project exploring the human warmth and nostalgia that can emerge from AI.
