Beneath the Love is an album that weaves together songs from the era of the Hawaiian Kingdom (late 19th to early 20th century) with original compositions by Hiliu, forming a single, continuous narrative.
The album features works by figures such as Queen Liliuokalani and King Kalākaua, as well as influential cultural contributors including Mary Kawena Pukui and Charles Edward King.
These songs reflect themes of love, loss, respect, nature, and the deep bonds between people, preserving the emotional and spiritual world of Hawaii during that time.
The latter part of the album presents original songs by Hiliu:
Because You Were There (Kimi Ga Ita Kara) and
Two Hearts, One Unspoken Love (Futaribun No Kataomoi).
These pieces carry the spirit of the traditional repertoire into the present, expressing love and memory through a modern musical lens.
The title Beneath the Love represents the idea that beneath visible expressions of love lies a timeless current of emotion... one that continues to flow across generations.
The harmonic vocal unit "Hiliu", means the sound or call of the wind instrument, the Hawaiian conch shell. Huliu has introduced our performances since 2014. We have received an official nomination (International album special recognition award) of the 43rd annual Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards from the Hawai'i Academy of Recording Arts for our first CD project "Be Still My Heart". Also nominated the 45th and 46th Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards.
