In life

MASLA-O

Artist Profile

  • MASLA-O

He was born in Toyonaka City, Osaka Prefecture. He was born into a "slightly above average" family that didn't quite fit in with the hip-hop scene. In 2019, he began his musical career in the closet of his parents' home. Alongside a mental illness that began around the same time, his life changed dramatically when he was diagnosed with depression and antidepressants. Unable to even get out of bed, he simply stared at death, feeling a contradiction in his ability to despise himself for no longer being "normal," yet also viewing himself as special. In 2021, he moved to Kyoto, where he began full-fledged live performances and released a single. His first EP, "J-BOY," released three years later, clearly showcases his doubts about Japan as a country and his Japanese-centric ideology. His first album, "NEW TOWN," released just before moving to Tokyo in 2025, explores the binary oppositions of his 22 years of life, such as "this side of the river and the other side," "life and death," and "normality and abnormality." Unlike typical hip-hop flexes, he places emphasis on the negative and his rules for exploring life are reflected in his lyrics. With lyrical and gloomy lyrics that are integrated with his own life, a style that exposes his vulnerability, and rough-hewn rhymes, he continues to write about big topics like life and death.
