The Sky Over Ebetsu
I grew up near the place where the Ishikari River and the Chitose River meet in Ebetsu, Hokkaido.
When I was young, all I wanted was to leave this town. Without telling anyone, I set out on a journey. Since then, I've spent my life traveling from river to river as a river guide, searching for dreams, hope, and something more-across Japan and around the world.
Yet every time I returned home, I found myself asking the same question:
"What is it that I'm truly looking for?"
I chased so many things, only to realize that what remained was a heart that still felt empty.
This song is a letter to my younger self-and to anyone still searching for what truly matters.
River Gypsy is the music project of Yohei Sugawara, a riverboard guide whose life has been shaped by rivers, travel, and personal challenge. Based in Mitake, Okutama, Tokyo, Yohei works as a professional riverboarding and hydrospeed guide while writing songs inspired by life on the river, the feeling of moving forward by his own will, and the long detours that shape a life. His music is not created as a message for someone else, but as an expression of following his own heart and passion, born from the days he has kept moving forward while feeling lost, holding on to this way of life as if he could not let it go. Through a simple voice and guitar, River Gypsy expresses the detours of life, the uncertainty of moving forward, and the act of challenging himself while still carrying weakness.
