During the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic and the global lockdown, Ekotumi-an artist known for her performances inspired by Japanese mythology-started a new art project called "covid19-20." The project invites us to reflect on what truly matters and to capture memories from that extraordinary time through sound and music.
This first piece in the series, "Tokyo Chant," is made from 114 sounds recorded across different areas of Tokyo between March and May 2020. The sounds are arranged so that they seem to come from their real-world directions, based on latitude and longitude.
"Tokyo Chant" is an experimental composition that blends natural soundscapes with layered vocal recordings. The voices overlap like a choir singing a hymn, creating a meditative and prayer-like atmosphere.
Cultural artist and novelist connecting ancient Japanese mythology with contemporary art. Through song, dance, and storytelling, she brings the voices of distant times into the present. A performance artist expanding her work across the world, beginning in Europe.
