LESS IS MORE, a string quartet made up of the players who graduated from the Faculty of Music of Tokyo University of the Arts
and inspired by the words of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, "the less, the richer,"
was formed in order to convey to the world Japanese people's unique sense of beauty
and the charm of the Kumano district, a World Heritage Site in Japan.
One of the characteristics of LESS IS MORE is that they play all their original tunes with irregular time.
Their original tunes caress the ear with flowing melodies, but once you count the cadence,
you will find it is five beats or seven beats. That will be a surprising finding.
Recently, LESS IS MORE is trying to step up more and push the envelope,
challenging to play tunes with eleventh or fifteenth beats.
Although it's not easy to play music with such irregular time at live concerts,
they will be more than happy if you cheer them believing they can do it, like you do when watching jumps in figure skating.
