In 1984, I was approached by an antique store in Kita-Aoyama to create background music to be played in the store for the opening of its new premises. The shop must have liked my occasional piano improvisations, because they asked me to create background music for the store's opening. I was so enthusiastic that I prepared all the materials. But when I played them back, I found that they were all too organic, with a clear main melody, to be of any use in creating an atmosphere. I was so discouraged by this that I finally failed to submit a song before the deadline (fortunately, a fellow guitarist in the band provided an environmental music soundtrack).
In this way, in my early twenties, I continued to lose the trust of those around me.
The sound sources that I failed to provide were not pleasant to listen to and did not fit in the port district of the 1980s, but as a work of art, there are many interesting aspects. For some people, it's possible to hear traces of the hard work of Non-musician with no knowledge or skills, who used all their imagination to create the music. The layers of sound that I developed during this period will eventually become the hallmark of my music, and those who can appreciate the budding sound may enjoy the degraded sound quality of the tapes.
If you can, please keep the volume low and it will sound good.
My name is Iwashita Keisuke, also known as Sardine. Over the 19 years from 1983 to 2002, I recorded about 150 songs that I recorded over multiple tracks by myself. I compiled these into eight albums and released them one after another in 2024. In 2025, instead of the anthology released the previous year, I will release an album that has been re-edited in chronological order. The first release was "Windsor Knot," a compilation of songs created between 1989 and 1995, released on January 25th. In February, I will release two titles from the "Cassette Gadget" series, which contain recordings made on cassette tapes between 1983 and 1984. It's an oldie but evergreen song that depicts a mixture of romanticism, cold-heartedness, and passion, as well as incoherent anxiety and longing for something that cannot be reached. Please listen to the variety of Sardine's songs.
