Swallowing assessment is an essential process to determine whether a person can safely swallow food and liquids. It evaluates not only the level of consciousness and posture, but also the five-phase model of swallowing (anticipatory, preparatory, oral, pharyngeal, and esophageal phases) to identify any impairments and assess the risk of aspiration or choking. Through screening tests and observation during meals, clinicians determine appropriate diet textures and rehabilitation strategies, aiming to restore safe and confident eating ability.
