Dots and Lines and Dots
Kijimael
"Dots and Lines and Dots" was inspired by a true story from the picture book The Stake That Traveled 8,000 Kilometers 2, in which a character named Critter the Stake crosses borders, connecting countless dots along the way.
The song was born as the theme song for that story.
This was also the very first song I created based on a picture book, making it a deeply important and personal piece for me.
Within this song are many words and feelings that matter greatly to me.
For me, a sensor represents connection.
Through the sensors inside each stake, they were able to communicate with one another-even when far apart, even when invisible to the eye.
Those connections increased one by one, eventually forming a vast network.
In this song, I wanted to carefully portray those invisible yet undeniable connections-
connections that I believe closely mirror the relationships between people.
The phrase "floating along" that appears in the lyrics is also a key element of the song.
In life, there are times when we find ourselves unable to do anything-
unable to move forward or resist-
moments when all we can do is simply float, carried by the current.
My hope is that even those times of floating along
can one day be looked back on and seen as meaningful, essential "dots" rather than wasted moments.
In the B section, the song also touches on themes of peace and borders.
Within boundaries drawn by countries, places, and social positions,
I wanted to ask how precious it truly is to have a place where one belongs.
At first glance, dots may seem far apart,
as if they could never be connected.
But the lines between them will, one day, surely be drawn.
With "Dots and Lines and Dots,"
I hope that we can connect across distance and difference,
across time itself.
And when all the dots finally come together,
I hope it will be in a world where everyone can smile together.
