A lounge music album produced by Makoto Kubota and featuring the piano of Rene Paulo, one of Hawaii's leading pianists, and Sandii's vocals, this luxurious collaboration has finally been released digitally.
Rene Paulo was born in 1929 on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. He died in 2023 at the age of 92.
Sandii's relaxed, tropical and exotic vocals stand out over a gentle, flowing piano arrangement that evokes a hotel bar lounge, and the ocean, sky, wind, and smells of Hawaii seem to rise up.
The album includes the well-known "Blue Hawai'i" and "Soshu Yakyoku", Frank Sinatra's hit "I've Got You Under My Skin", "Dahil Sa Iyo", a Filipino folk song, and "Kainoa" from the artist, IZ's album, released in 1999. This album is a superb album that will not fade away even if you listen to it now.
The traditional Hawaiian number "Lei Aloha, Lei Makamae" features vocals by Martin Pahinui, whose father is the legendary Hawaiian musician Gabby Pahinui. He died in 2017 at the age of 65.
This album, featuring talented Hawaiian musicians who are now deceased, must be a rare recording nowadays.
Sandii lived in Hawaii during her late teens and most of her 20s. In that period, she sang in clubs and studied hula with Aunty Bella Richards of Kailua. She also met and bonded with Pattye Kealohalani Wright, who later became a Kumu Hula through Aunty Lani Kalama (1990). Sandii has the various, many different musical phases of her recording career. She has recorded as Sandi Ai, Sandy Hohn, Sandii & the Sunsetz, and now as Sandii. Since 1996, her albums have been Hawaiian or Polynesian-theme.
