Kii Psalms Chapter 2
Yoichi Ebihara
Title: Summary of "Kii: Two Intersecting Sanctuaries"
In summarizing Chapters One and Two of "The Psalms of Kii," what struck me most profoundly was that both journeys ultimately culminated in a sanctuary (sacred ground).
Using the Shirahama region as a midpoint, the ancient and historic land of Kii offers two distinct paths: one heading north toward the inner sea, and the other heading south toward the open ocean. Though the scenery changes along each route, the final destinations reached are Mount Koya to the north, and the Nachi Falls and Kumano Sanzan (the three grand shrines of Kumano) to the south.
Note: The term "Sanctuary" refers to sacred grounds and holy places, such as Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples. It is a phrase used here to describe the sacred sites of the Kii Mountain Range, which are also famous as a World Heritage site (including Kumano Sanzan and Mount Koya).
If this collection of lyrics has managed to capture and preserve even a fraction of the impression left by the ancient dignity of these two intersecting sanctuaries, then this endeavor can truly be said to have held meaning.
