Ekotumi is an artist who brings the ancient tales of Japanese mythology into the present through music. Her song "Nemuru Kimi" ("You are still sleeping") is the fifth installment in the covid19-20 series-an art project launched during the spring 2020 lockdown. In this global sonic experiment, she called upon friends around the world to record the ambient sounds of their surroundings. A total of 295 soundscapes from 128 locations were collected and arranged according to their actual geographical coordinates, allowing listeners to hear the sounds from their original directions-creating a planet-wide soundscape experience.
In the music video, Ekotumi, nine months pregnant at the time, dances as a symbol of the cycle of life, invoking unseen forces.
The recurring phrase in the lyrics,
"You are still sleeping / Listen to our voices / Wake up",
is a quiet prayer directed toward the divinity and soul-memory within each of us.
With a voice that is both gentle and powerful, the song softly awakens the forgotten light that resides within.
Cultural artist and novelist connecting ancient Japanese mythology with contemporary art. Through song, dance, and storytelling, she brings the voices of distant times into the present. A performance artist expanding her work across the world, beginning in Europe.
