A melancholy Bristol sound which was born in a small village with a population of only 30.
This spring, a new artist, The Grus, will join the attractive artists who feature a dark and down-tempo sound such as Portishead, Massive Attack, Thom Yorke, and PJ Harvey!
A small village of just 30 people in Russia. The environment of social isolation created a unique existence of pure beauty and hidden aggression. The elements that compose their sound are old analog synthesizers, guitars made in Soviet, and home-made microphones, but the most distinctive element is the voice of vocalist Shura Zhuravleva. It's a miraculous meeting as if Fiona Apple was flirting with dark electronica.
This album contains tunes such as the psychedelic opener, 'To Be A Child', 'A Secret Place' a dark, aggressive electronic track, and title track 'The Great Nest', with a dramatic gospel like melody. In addition, 'Home' has a solid technique of classical music. Each track suggests a never-ending talent within their secluded environment.
This Ricco Label edition includes not only their debut album 'Nest' but also the first single 'Ivan Tea' and the B-side track 'Autumn' as bonus tracks. This album will invite all music fans to the hidden nest.
The Grus is an experimental/downtempo band formed by Shura Zhuravleva and Simon Gendor in a remote Russian village with the population of 30 people. It seems rather hard to pinpoint the sound of the band due to a large number of influences it incorporates, like early gospel/blues singers, the 70's west Berlin music, modern trip-hop and experimental electronic music. The Grus creates their unique palette of sounds using analog synths, old-fashioned guitars from the Soviet era, tape recorders and an array of handmade instruments and microphones, as well as the singing of birds living nearby the studio. At first, this music might seem a little bleak, but with every listen it unfolds beautifully, full of inner light, layered rhythmic structures and soft melodies. Their first album, 'Nest', released on Follyphone, Golden Ass Distro, and Ricco Label in 2016, received critical acclaim.
