The song Overlaps was created to participate in the Tokyo Music Tora project, where artists freely compose songs based on themes presented by popular influencers and celebrities.
The theme I chose is inspired by an episode shared by Yuchami.
Yuchami has a younger sister, Yuichami, and in a video, she spoke about a certain rule between them:
If it overlaps, the older sister takes it.
In Japanese, this means:
If they choose the same thing, the older sister gets priority.
I believe this rule applies not only when they deliberately choose the same thing but also when they are put in a situation where they have no choice but to make the same decision.
And this does not only apply to material possessions but also to love, pain, and even sacrifices at times.
I felt that this rule was a kind of promise, a way for the sisters to stay close for life.
The Episode and My Interpretation
One day, the two sisters found themselves in a love triangle, both falling for the same man.
In the end, the younger sister chose to step aside and let her older sister have him, just as their rule dictates.
Thus, Yuchami ended up dating him.
However, during a date where they went to see the night view, she discovered he had been cheating.
When she confronted him, he immediately changed his attitude.
On the way back, he kicked her out of his car, leaving her stranded alone on a dark mountain road.
Had her younger sister chosen him instead, she would have been the one to get hurt.
In hindsight, the rule, If it overlaps, the older sister takes it, became a shield that protected the younger sister.
This rule, I believe, is not meant for the older sister's benefit.
Rather, it sometimes means the older sister takes on pain and sacrifice.
In an extreme case, if a moment ever came where one of them had to give up their life,
it would be the older sister who makes that choice,
because If it overlaps, the older sister takes it.
About the Song
This song portrays the bond between sisters and the role of the older sister.
She takes on both love and pain, because that is simply what it means to be the older sibling.
Overlaps is a song that illustrates a sisterly rule where the older sister carries not only material things and love but even pain.
This song was created based on my own interpretation of the story,
but I would be honored if you gave it a listen.
