Genre: Sewamono (domestic drama), but an outlaw work dealing with Pirates and Smuggling.
Kyoto merchant Kezori Kueemon (aka Sōshichi) is actually a pirate leader who amassed immense wealth through the forbidden practice of smuggling. He becomes deeply involved with a courtesan named Kojorō from Hakata. Kuemon's crimes are exposed, and he becomes a fugitive pursued by officials. He urges Kojorō, Let's flee together to the sea. However, the sea rages violently, and pursuers close in. A desperate escape unfolds aboard the ship. Kyūemon reveals his true, bold nature. He and the young woman either vanish beyond the waves or meet a spectacular end. (The title Namimakura refers to sleeping with the ship as a pillow, and by extension, signifies the unstable fate of drifting upon the sea.)
