There were two brothers: Umisachihiko, who inherited the power of the sea, and Yamasachihiko, closer to the gods of the mountains.
One day, the younger brother borrowed a fishing hook from the elder-but he lost it in the sea.
The elder was enraged and blamed him harshly.
To make amends, the younger brother descended into the ocean depths to search.
There, he met the sea god's daughter, Tamayorihime.
With her help, he found the lost hook and returned it to his brother.
But the hook had already been tainted by his brother's anger-it had become a cursed hook.
In time, the two brothers broke ties completely.
And from that rupture, a divine child was born.
That child would become the origin of Japan's imperial lineage.
