On March 18, 2026, we will release "Crush," a track in which classical piano sounds harmonize with an '80s UK band aesthetic, elevating it into J-pop. The song portrays the inner emotions of a protagonist who, while admiring the talents and ways of life of those around them, must also confront feelings of anxiety and jealousy.
The piece opens with a quietly resonating classical piano intro, soon joined by a rhythm guitar reminiscent of "Every Breath You Take" by The Police, carrying the atmosphere of classic Western music as it steadily drives forward. A solid drum groove and a grounded bass lay the foundation, while delicately rhythmic guitar phrases and rich vocals intertwine above, creating a sound that is both gentle and firmly powerful, enveloping the listener.
In the chorus, the melody is doubled in octave unison, instantly widening the sonic landscape and generating a distinctly J-pop sense of uplift. Whereas a typical arrangement might return to the second verse after the chorus, this track instead introduces a new melodic development, reflecting the modern preference for shorter song formats and offering listeners a fresh surprise. In the second chorus, layered harmonies overlap intricately, pursuing a chorus work that feels both familiar and increasingly euphoric toward the finale.
In the outro, English lyrics engage in a melodic interplay, interwoven with natural Japanese phrasing that preserves the nuance of the English language. This approach also reflects the influence of Southern All Stars, whom vocalist Miura deeply admires.
Blending the elegance of classical Western music with contemporary J-pop, "Crush" embodies the spirit of the times while remaining close to universal human emotions.
The music video for the song is scheduled to premiere on kohamo's official YouTube channel at 7:00 PM on the release day.
Formed in 2024 in the Hokusetsu area of Osaka, they are a four-piece band active mainly in Osaka and Tokyo. Influenced by J-pop artists such as Southern All Stars and Gen Hoshino, as well as 80s UK and US music and The 1975, their sound is characterized by a wide range of diverse approaches depending on the song, along with lyrics by vocalist Kaiki Miura that delve into the essence of human nature. In the spring of 2025, marking their second year of activity, they released their 2nd EP "Kirakira no Watashitachi." Three songs from the EP were selected for Spotifys official playlist "Kirakira Pop Japan," with the band also being featured on its top cover.
