Singer/rapper mezz, who recently released the well-received single "night time friends", has teamed up for the first time with audiot909 - a pioneer of Japanese Amapiano and also active as a music writer - for the new single "Touch".
Amapiano, a style of dance music that originated in South Africa from house and kwaito roots, has recently made its way onto global charts with artists like Tyla. "Touch" draws inspiration from Tyla's hit song "Water", blending Amapiano's groove and Afrobeat-inflected R&B into a uniquely Japanese pop format. Rather than replicating its cultural origins, this track weaves in the atmospheric humidity and the loosely structured urban rhythm of Tokyo - offering a reinterpretation rooted in the city's spatial texture.
audiot909's trademark low-end modulation and melodic build give the track a floor-shaking, border-crossing strength while maintaining a distinctly "Tokyo street" sensibility. mezz's bilingual lyrics in Japanese and English float effortlessly across the beat with a soft vocal flow that rides the rhythm rather than pushing against it.
With performances at international festivals including Summer Sonic, and collaborations with UK producers like Roska and Sharda, mezz now presents Japan's subtle yet confident reply to the global rise of Amapiano.
The music video, directed by the creative team Skid - known for visuals such as mezz's "Money From The Dirt", saccharin's "Shisoukaseki", and age's "IGNITE" - will be released simultaneously with the single. Through its visual tempo and tone, it captures the nuanced push-and-pull of the track's groove, further deepening the song's spatial and emotional resonance.
