Inspired by historical and domestic plays, Chikamatsu Monzaemon's "Tsukuni Meotoike" (1721), Takemotoza Theater, Osaka
Tsukuni (present-day Itami City, Hyogo Prefecture) is based on the legend of the real-life "Meotoike" pond and the local cult of soft-shelled turtles (such as the Konyoike pond). This work, from Chikamatsu's later years, is reminiscent of a ghost story, depicting the murky obsessions of humankind and the inescapable force of karma. Unlike typical double suicide stories, this suspenseful work tells of a man who kills his friend and steals his wife, only to be ruined a few years later.
Reizei Monjibyoe and his friend Sagiike Heikuro are both in love with a woman named Oichi. Oichi marries Heikurou, but Bunjibei, unable to contain his jealousy and desire, ambushes and kills Heikurou. He buries his body, making it look like an accident. Afterwards, Bunjibei comforts Oichi and skillfully convinces her to become his wife. The couple has a child, but the memory of the murder always haunts Bunjibei.
