ポストパンクを軸に活動するバンド Modern Jazz War(MJW)が、9 月 24 日(水)にデビュー EP『Holes in Modernity』をデ ジタル配信にてリリースする。
本作には、先日リリースされたファーストシングル「Bleeding for Nothing」、セカンドシングル「C2 (scared to name it me)」 に加え、新曲「Lost in Static」やノイズ楽曲を含む全 7 曲を収録。バンドの初期衝動と実験性が凝縮された作品となっている。
EPタイトル『HolesinModernity』は「現代社会に穿たれた穴」を意味し、整えられた “正しさ” や過剰な調和に対する批評 精神をコンセプトとしている。楽曲群は、不安定さや断絶、そして歪さに潜む美をあぶり出す試みでもある。
サウンド面では、全曲クリックを用いず全曲を一発録りで収録。繊細なアンビエントのような音から幕を開け、「Lost in Static」へと緊張感を増しながら進行し、アンセム的な「Bleeding for Nothing」で大団円を迎える。その後、再び繊細なノイ ズへと収束し、冒頭へとループしていく構成が特徴的だ。緊張感と危うさを孕んだ展開が、一貫して EP 全体を覆っている。また、 レコーディング/ミックスに Kensei Ogata、マスタリングには Japanese Breakfast や Blondshell を手がけるオーディオエンジ ニア・Katie Lau を迎えている。ジャケットデザインは、デザイン事務所 SIUN が手がけた。コンセプトである「Hole(穴)」 を視覚化したアートワークは、EP のテーマと強く呼応する仕上がりとなっている。
さらに同日、アンビエント EP『Habitual Emptiness Remains』も同時公開される。こちらは MJW の実験的な側面を拡張し、 ノイズや残響に焦点を当てた作品で、本編 EP とあわせて聴くことでバンドの多層的な世界観がより鮮明に立ち上がる。 リリース当日の 9 月 24 日には、下北沢 SPREAD にてリリースパーティも開催。ゲストアクトに aryy、A Virgin、Gretchen Grundler を迎え、DJ として Natsuki Kato(Luby Sparks)、Kai Fujita(Deadbeat Painters)が参加する。音源とライブ、両面か ら MJW の現在地を体感できる一夜となる。
