Stage History and Overview
The play premiered in January of the 9th year of Kyoho (1724) at the Takemoto-za Theater in Osaka. It is a Jidaimono (historical play) written by Chikamatsu Monzaemon. Written in 1723, it is widely known as his posthumous work (Zekkhitsu) and his final masterpiece. It depicts the grand ambition of Soma Yoshikado (the son of Taira no Masakado) to overthrow the Imperial Court.

As Chikamatsus longest and largest-scale work, it fuses the legend of Masakado with the fantastical elements of the Earth Spider (Tsuchigumo). Unlike his realistic Sewamono (domestic plays), this piece demonstrates the magnificent imagination and storytelling power he possessed in his final years, leaving a legacy that transcends the boundaries of puppet theater.

1 The Grudge of Kocho
The protagonist Yoshikados sister, Kocho, transforms into a monstrous Earth Spider (Tsuchigumo) due to her deep grudge and jealousy. This transformation is a central highlight of the play.

2 The Spectacle of Treason
The play portrays the grand scale of the rebellion by the Soma clan against the Minamoto clan (Raiko and his Four Guardian Kings), featuring sorcery and large-scale battles that heavily influenced later Kabuki adaptations.

3 The Legacy
While Tsuruya Nanboku IV later adapted this theme in 1824 with his own distinct flavor (adding Toads and more grotesque elements), this original work by Chikamatsu stands as the monumental origin of the Masakado theatrical tradition.
