History and Overview
This is a period masterpiece by Chikamatsu Monzaemon.
The legend of "Ushiwakamaru and Benkei" is not simply a heroic tale, but is depicted as a "clash of souls" between a giant man with an inner emptiness and a boy who sees the true essence of things.
Chikamatsu's distinctive, intense emotions intersect on the stage of Gojo Bridge.

The revival of the Genji clan, the path of asura...
Rather than slaying a thousand men, slay one man...
One master, one lord...

I pray, I will slay a thousand men.

The wind in the capital smells of blood...

Butterflies, leaves, heat haze...

A Tengu wind trained at Kurama

Even if your body is protected by armor,
(Armor protects the flesh, not the heart.

Your eyes yearn for Shura.
(I see the hunger in your eyes...)
What I truly desire isn't the sword.
(It's not the sword you realize...)
My power means nothing... against this light.
(Was it my arm or my heart that was defeated?)
(Did my arm fail? Or did my spirit break?)
What would be the point of collecting a thousand swords?
(What is the point of a thousand blades?)
I'm defeated, defeated, I surrender.
(I surrender... I found my place.)
