I composed Spirit of Asia as a dance suite. It was created with the desire to find more fundamental rhythms and melodies that penetrate the world. There are nine pieces, which were completed using ethnic instruments from various cultures. During the production process, I realized that the classification of the instruments was related to four different cultures and civilizations, and so I established five categories to proceed with the production. This flow overlaps with the origin of humankind, who originated in Africa. Afro-Eurasian cultures and civilizations were created as people spread across the globe. Music and instruments were naturally a part of it. We are currently in a global era where worlds are connected to each other, but also a dangerous era where countries can easily be divided. Each country has its own ethnic groups and musical cultures rooted in it land. There are many movements aimed at exchange that transcends countries and cultures, and creation that goes beyond cultures will likely become even more necessary.
