Inspired by Kako Chika, "Tsubosaka Miracle Chronicles" (1879)
Kako Chika (wife of Toyotake Danpei). It is said to have been edited by Fukuchi Ochi.

Hikorokakuuta Tsubosaka Teisha Jodo Yuen Ganmei Eisei
"Tsubosaka Miracle Chronicles" (Tsubosaka Miracle Chronicles) is a one-act joruri and kabuki drama created during the Meiji period. Set at Tsubosaka Temple in Nara, it tells the story of the love between a blind husband, Sawaichi, and his wife, Osato, who devotes herself to curing his eyesight, as well as the miracle of Kannon. It is known as a masterpiece, with the horrific scene of a man throwing himself into the mountains suddenly leading to the miraculous awakening of his eyes.

The impoverished life of blind Sawaichi and his wife, O-Sato: Sawaichi, a blind masseur living near Tsubosaka Temple in Yamato Province (Nara Prefecture), suspects his wife, O-Sato, of going out somewhere every night and confronts her.

O-Sato confesses that she has been visiting the Kannon Bodhisattva at Tsubosaka Temple every day, hoping that Sawaichi's eyesight would improve. Ashamed of his suspicions, Sawaichi senses O-Sato's deep love for him.

Sawaichi despairs, believing that his and O-Sato's existence together is causing her pain, and out of true love, he throws himself into the valley below Tsubosaka Temple when his wife takes her eyes off him.

O-Sato follows him, and the two are brought back to life by the miraculous power of the Kannon Bodhisattva, and Sawaichi's sight is restored. The deep bond between husband and wife creates a miracle.
