A piece I improvised when I was a university student. It was composed at the same time as "Music for bluefish" and is a sister piece with the same title, but they share the same writing style of repetition of very simple accompaniment patterns and melody. This piece is mainly composed of solos in the lower register of the flute, and the title is derived from that (solitary).
The piece is in three beats and can be considered a slow waltz, but the rhythm of the accompaniment has no bass, which should be on the first beat, and the second and third beats are played ahead of schedule, creating a sense of stagnation in the flow. The strings play only pizzicato quarter notes, and the flute solo is intertwined with other wind instruments, but nothing accompanies it for long, and it returns to the solo again. It is in the key of C major, but is predominantly dark in tone due to the extremely high number of non-harmonic notes. The piece was originally written for keyboard, but counterpoint treatment was added during orchestration. However, the composition and harmony of the piece have not been altered in any way.
