The landscapes painted by the German artist Caspar David Friedrich (1774~1840) differ from all earlier Western paintings in that the landscape itself takes center stage. Even when figures appear, they stand with their backs turned to the viewer, quietly absorbed into the scenery before them. Their presence invites us to become observers of the landscape, drawing us across time and space into the world of the painting.
Friedrich's landscapes seem to press upon us as if endowed with their own will. Before the solitary wanderer stretch steep, forbidding mountains and a breathtaking sea of clouds-scenery that appears to reject human intrusion. This vision, suggesting a journey that continues without end, stirs within us a sense of solitude, reverence for nature, and an unquenchable longing for distant travels.
The music, quoting the melody of Schubert's Der Wanderer, traces the inner journey of the painter as he confronts the natural world.
